Warthog

Phacochoerus africanus

Size: Up to 75cm high
Habitat: Savannah, grasslands, woodland
Feeding: Grass, tubers, fruit

The Warthog is a member of the pig family. It has two pairs of tusks and derives its name from the wart-like lumps on its face which help to protect its eyes when fighting. Both sexes have tusks but the male tusks are larger.

It has a grey/brown hide with a mane of hair from the top of the head along the back.

When running, it holds its tail erect like an arrow.

They have a lifespan of 8 - 10 years.

The first photo was taken in Laikipia, Kenya and the second in the Amboseli National Park, Kenya.
