African Skimmer

Rynchops flavirostris

Size: 38 cms long
Habitat: Near lakes and rivers
Feeding: Fish

The African Skimmer is a fairly rare bird which lives near water. The long wings and crown are black and the body is white. Its most striking feature is the large orange/red beak with a yellow tip. The legs are red.

They feed mostly at dawn and dusk, skimming above the water with their lower mandible in the water to scoop up fish.

These photos were taken in the Selous National Park, Tanzania.
