Crested Barbet

Trachyphonus vaillantii

Size: 24 cm
Habitat: Woodland, grassland and savanna
Feeding: Insects and fruit

The Crested Barbet is a colourful red and yellow bird. The body is yellow. The head is red and yellow with a black crest. The wings are black with white speckles and it has a black speckled ring around its neck.

These photos were taken in the Okovango, Botswana and the Selous National Park, Tanzania. In the photo at bottom left, the barbet was playing with a Giant Millipede with a view to having lunch!
