Ruff

Philomachus pugnax

Size: Male up to 32 cms long, female up to 26cms long
Habitat: Marshes and wetlands
Feeding: Insects and molluscs

The Ruff is a medium-sized wading bird. It is a migrant which over-winters in Africa.

The plummage can be quite variable, although mostly patterned brown, beige, grey and white. The legs are orange/yellow and it has a shorter beak than other similar wading birds. The male is significantly bigger than the female.
