Southern Carmine Bee-eater

Merops nubicoides

Size: 38 cm
Habitat: Grassland, woodland and lake shores
Feeding: Flying insects such as bees, wasps, butterflies

This is one of the most brightly coloured Bee-eaters with bright pink plummage and a blue/green head. The Southern Carmine Bee-eater can be differentiated from its Northern counterpart by its red/pink throat.

As it's name suggests, it feeds on bees, wasps and other flying insects.

They are very gregarious and live in large colonies.

These photos were taken in the Okavango Delta in Botswana.
