Squacco Heron

Ardeola ralloides

Size: Up to 47 cms high, wingspan up to 92 cms
Habitat: Wetlands
Feeding: Insects, fish and amphibians

The Squacco Heron is a fairly small heron which over-winters in Africa. It is so-called because of its sqawking call.

It is mostly pale brown but is very distinctive when flying with white underparts and underwings. It has a strong beak, a shorter neck than some of the other herons. The legs are yellow/green.
